Church History

Mt. Avery Missionary Baptist Church

Mt. Avery Missionary Baptist Church was established in the early 1900’s.The spelling originated as Mount Arat and Mount Ary then evolved to Mt. Avery. The first building consisted of a one story wooden structure. In the 1960’s, Mt. Avery Missionary Baptist Church was remolded and a year later the church suffered some structural damage. The building had to be secured to permit entry so important documents, church pews, the communion table, and other items could be recovered. Until the church could be restored, Mt. Avery’s services were held at the Margaret Community Club, located near what is now Dillard Park.

On June 24, 1977, the rebuilding of Mt. Avery Missionary Baptist Church was completed and services were moved back to the church.

There were a lot of obstacles and trials that were overcome as well as memories created by all the “The Great Trailblazers” of Mt. Avery Missionary Baptist Church to bring us to our present leadership. With his obedience and guidance from the Lord, our current torchbearer, Reverend Vernon L. Jackson Sr., Mt.
Avery is continually being blessed.
